We work with a number of boiler inspectors to ensure we comply with PSSR 2000 during our steam boiler repairs.
In the UK, PSSR stands for the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations. The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR 2000) is a set of regulations that aim to ensure the safe operation of pressure systems and equipment. These regulations apply to any system containing a relevant fluid under pressure, including steam, gases, and liquids.
The main objectives of the PSSR 2000 regulations are to prevent the risk of injury from the failure of pressure systems, ensure that pressure systems are constructed, maintained, and operated in a safe manner, and provide a framework for periodic examination and inspection of pressure systems.
Key requirements under the PSSR 2000 regulations include:
- Written Scheme of Examination: A written scheme of examination must be prepared by a competent person and implemented for each pressure system. The scheme outlines the frequency and nature of inspections and examinations required.
- Thorough Examination: Pressure systems must undergo a thorough examination at specified intervals, as outlined in the written scheme of examination. The examination is conducted by a competent person and involves assessing the system’s condition, identifying any defects or risks, and recommending necessary remedial actions.
- Competent Persons: The regulations require that examinations and inspections are carried out by competent persons who have the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to assess pressure systems’ safety.
- Notification: The regulations stipulate that pressure systems falling within specific criteria must be notified to the relevant enforcing authority. This requirement ensures that the authority is aware of the pressure systems within their jurisdiction.
- Records: Detailed records must be maintained, documenting the history, inspections, examinations, and any remedial actions taken in relation to pressure systems.
Compliance with the PSSR 2000 regulations is essential to ensure the safety of pressure systems and mitigate the risk of accidents or injuries. It is important to consult the official documentation and seek expert advice to understand the full scope and requirements of the regulations, as there may be additional specific considerations and exemptions depending on the circumstances. All steam boiler repairs are inspected at various stages throughout their rebuild.
